I Don’t Believe It

The catch phrase of Victor Meldrew from “One Foot in the Grave” perfectly echoed my sentiments after watching Rammy plummet to defeat.

It is always a joy to visit a ground I still call Lanehead and meet up with several of my old acquaintances and that was the case on Sunday. It was apparent even from the boundary edge that water had leaked under the covers so I was very surprised when Bacup won the toss and elected to bat.

It soon became clear that batting was going to be a test of survival and in the 2nd over Shaq struck two early blows having Adlum well caught by TP at slip then the Bacup pro Khurana brilliantly caught down the leg side by Harry.

Run scoring was at a premium with the ball doing all sorts and wickets fell at regular intervals. All the Rammy bowlers had good returns with Shaq picking up 4 for 17, the Bird 2 for 25 off 14 overs, Joe with 2 for 8 and Hareen 2 for 4 off 5.5 overs.

At the end of the day looking at the scorecard the partnership of Ball (9 not out off 41 balls) and Boardman (2 off 40 balls) which added 13 runs for the 9th wicket was to prove very significant.

Still, a target of 65, no matter how much of a minefield the wicket was, should have been easily attainable with the Rams strong batting line up. Everything was going hunky dory with JJ and TP putting on 22 in the first 2 and a half overs. TP then got one that stopped on him and lobbed up for point to take an easy catch.

We then got the Khurana show. Firstly he produced a beauty to JJ which found an edge and was well caught by Lord at first slip. Then with the score on 29 he had Ben, who had smashed a big six out of the ground in the previous over, brilliantly caught by the diving Boardman at deep mid on. Our pro Hareen was the next to go with one that flew up and came off a length, caught his glove and was caught by leg slip. The score was now 36 for 4.

By this point Bacup sensed they were in with a shout and had adopted a very aggressive field to their pro.

Tom Y-R came in at this juncture, clearly with the intention of smashing their bowlers off their line. His first scoring stroke was a big six off Lord over the square leg boundary. He was in partnership with Brad who seemed to be playing Khurana with as much comfort as anybody until with the score on 47 he got one that kept very low and despite getting a bit of bat on it only succeeded in playing on.

One run later Tom Y-R perished caught a deep square leg. Another 4 runs and Khurana inflicted two more body blows on the Rams with two outstanding catches, one at slip to get rid of Harry and then a caught and bowled to remove Joe.

When the Doyler was stumped on 53 we needed a miracle and although the Bird managed a two to get an extra bonus point the game ended when Shaq was caught by you know who.

This was a desperately disappointing result for us but at least we managed seven bonus points. We cannot blame the track because it was the same for both sides but the Bacup pro had one of those games in the field that happen very rarely. His figures of 7 for 19 speak for themselves plus you can add two catches off his compatriot Ben Lord to complete a memorable day for him.

Man of the Match – Shaq for his 4 for 17

Footnote – we now face two tough games that will shape our season. We have to push this performance out of our mind and I have every confidence that the lads will rise to the challenge.
