Rammy Seconds win handsomely in best performance of season so far

Rammy entertained Lowerhouse at Acre Bottom on Saturday 2 July looking to get back on track after the previous week’s loss to the noisey neighbours. Rammy had won the earlier season game at Lowerhouse by 6 wickets but Lowerhouse were in good recent form and are through to the Cup semi final. In Mark Dentith’s absence, Nick Round was captain and after winning the toss he decided to bat on a track drying out after some heavy rain throughout the week. There was a healthy crowd present buoyed by a good following from the House and several Ramsbottom United players and officials .

The Ramsbottom openers Nick and Mano started well with Mano taking an early liking to the short river boundary. Runs flowed freely with Nick intelligently looking for singles to get Mano on strike. With five 6s and four 4s Mano brought up his first collection of the day when reaching 50 before he was dismissed for 58 at 80 for 1. Mikey was out shortly after then and at the drinks break Rammy were 117 for 2 with 23 overs left. Ben ‘Tom’ Parkinson joined Nick and the two continued to bat and run well until Nick was out at for 55 at 176 for 3. Ben continued to score freely whilst wickets were lost at the opposite end as quick runs were looked for. Ben was finally out for 85 off 74 balls and the innings finished on 257 for 8. The wicket was very good but 257 looked a healthy total.

The Ramsbottom opening bowlers Mano and Seb put Lowerhouse under pressure and Mano gained three early wickets including the dangerous Jack Simm for a duck. At 21 for 3, Lowerhouse were relying on their prolific local batter Yorke-Robinson and his partner Sharpe. Aided by an excellent diving catch from Chris Round, Mano dismissed Sharpe at 51 for 4.  Toby Ashworth was the first change bowler from the football stand end and he soon was amongst the wickets with two bowled and one lbw. Mano continued his spell from the old paper mill end and gained his 5th wicket and second collection.  Yorke-Robinson was finally dismissed by Chris Round who took another excellent catch in his caught and bowled for the last wicket. Lowerhouse were dismissed for 109 with Ramsbottom winning by 148 runs. The performance was described by manager Chris Woods as the best all round performance of the season to date.

Man of the match. Lots of candidates this week including Toby’s 3 wickets, Nick’s 55, Ben Parkinson’s 85, Chris Rounds two wickets and 2 excellent catches but the winner this week has to be Mano with 58 runs and 5 wickets for 23 off 12 overs.
