Strong team performance brings local derby win for Rammy 3rds at Greenmount

On Thursday 2 June the third team travelled to sunny Greenmount looking to get back to winning ways after the defeat to Rochdale. With a large and thirsty following from Ramsbottom out numbering the locals it felt like a home game. It was pleasing to see so many first and second team players at the game supporting the third team.

Captain Simon Read won the toss and invited Greenmount to bat on an end wicket with a very short boundary. Toby Anderson and Toby Ashworth opening the bowling with little luck and the home team were soon over 60 for no loss scoring at 4 an over. The introduction of Ed Lee brought the first wicket and two other wickets on the same score reduced the home side to 67 for 3 but with over 20 overs left. Tight bowling from all 5 of the Ramsbottom attack together with good fielding, brought more wickets with no Greenmount batter able to gain any momentum. With three wickets falling in the last over Greenmount were bowled out for 135 with the wicket takers Ed Lee 3 for 28, Toby Ashworth 2 for 24, Toby Anderson 2 for 24 and Chris Round 2 for 15 and one run out. The score felt not enough.

The Ramsbottom reply started badly with the early loss of Ali Abbas. Isaac Turner and Toby Ashworth dug in against some tight Greenmount bowling taking the score to 84 before both falling. Isaac 31 off 82 and Toby 37 off 78. With the run rate raising to 5 an over Ramsbottom lost 2 more cheap wickets before Ryan Storey (24 off 21) came in to steady the ship and alongside Jack Hinchcliffe (9 off 11) and Chris Round (9 off 8) to take Ramsbottom to victory in the 38th over. Chris winning the match with a 6 into the Ramsbottom followers, badly misfielded by the Ramsbottom Chairman and Sparky.

A number of contenders for “Mano” of the match included Ed Lee’s 3 wickets, Toby Ashworth’s 2 wickets and 37, Mano himself for being the best dressed umpire with sparkling white trainers, Isaac 31 runs, Toby Anderson’s 2 wickets, Ryan Storey for his quickfire 24 not out, Chris Round for his 2 wickets and his winning 6 but I am going to give it to young Lewis Almond-Read for his exemplary fielding including catch.
