Match Report Rochdale 3rd XI v Ramsbottom 3rd XI 17 April 2021 by Phil Croft

For the third time in a week, Ramsbottom CC travelled to Redbrook to face Rochdale CC on a gorgeous spring day. Following some early season friendlies during the week for our U15s and U18s, many players in our young 3rd XI were hopeful of our chances in the Group C league clash.

Winning the toss on a pitch that looked to have something for the bowlers, Rochdale elected to bat and Rammy’s opening bowler Ryan Storey had early success removing both openers in the first two deliveries of his 3rd over. Tom Ireland backed up his opening partner brilliantly restricting the Rochdale total to just 23 for 2 off 10. But gradually the hosts gained the upper hand, helped by several dropped catches, and a mature innings from youngster Harry Butterworth (59) supported by Ben Davies (25) and Harry Whittles (41). However, Rammy were still hopeful on a drying pitch that the 173 target was within reach if we batted well.

Our openers made a fast start and confidence was building at 29 without loss in the 6th over before Brad Wilson (19) was caught behind. Toby Ashworth (17) looked to be in control before falling to a well held catch at point. Oliver Croft (12) and Tom Ireland (11) were the pick of the rest as Rammy sadly fell well short reaching 89 all out from 26 overs. As we enjoyed our first post match beer of the season, we contemplated what could have been, if we’d only held our catches and got our heads down at the crease a lot better.

Nevertheless, well done to Rochdale CC and thanks for their hospitality on hopefully the first of many days out in the sunshine this season.
