The Bird and Shaq Set up Comfortable Cup Win

With the weather relenting for a day the Rams managed to get their Cup game in against a Colne side somewhat depleted due to a few members of their squad attending former Acre Bottom player Andy Hakin’s stag do.

Obviously the wicket, despite the hard work of our ground staff, was damp in a couple of areas so it was a bit of a surprise that Colne decided to take first knock after winning the toss.

These conditions are right up the street of the Bird and along with his opening bowling partner, Joe, they extracted plenty of variable bounce and movement out of the track resulting in Colne losing half their wickets with only 15 runs on the board, Birdy claiming four of them.

The Colne pro Kumara was then joined by Senapathi and the pair set about reparing the damage. The progress was slow but they managed see out the Bird’s allocation of overs and brought about changes in our attack.

It was the introduction of Shaq that brought about the breakthrough when he took an excellent return catch to get rid of the Colne paid man with the score on 44. Two runs later he removed Walker and a very early finish looked on the cards.

Rashid then joined Senapathi and the pair dug in and started to play shots on a wicket that was losing its fire. Acting captain JJ swapped his bowling about in an attempt to split the pair but they added 50 runs before Rashid lobbed an easy catch to him of Shaq. Six runs later a silly run out brought Colne’s last man to the wicket and Senapathi then fell trying to hit Shaq out of the ground and only presenting JJ with another easy catch.

With the track easing thanks to the sun and wind a target of 102 should not have been a problem for the Rams batting line up.

As TP had kept wicket JJ decided to open with himself and the Pin.

The pair set about the case with relish, running brilliantly between the wickets and punishing any loose deliveries. They took the score to 55 off 10 overs when JJ fell for a fine 37. The Pin then took over the mantle as the main run scorer and after surprisingly losing Ben on 77, took the score level before presenting an easy catch to the Colne captain for a well made 41. It was left to TP to see us home with over 30 overs remaining.

Man of the Match – Shared between the Bird (4 for 21) and Shaq (4 for 20)
